Tree History

CIRCA 1960

The Seedling

A black walnut seed fell on a hillside in Middle Tennessee, likely carried by a squirrel and forgotten in the leaf litter. It overwintered, split its hull, and sent down a taproot before the first thaw of 1961. The rocky, well-drained slopes of the Cumberland Plateau gave it exactly what it needed — space, sunlight, and decades of quiet.

1960 – 2024

64 Years on the Hill

For six decades this walnut climbed toward the canopy, putting on a new ring each year through drought summers and hard winters. The mineral-rich Tennessee soil gave the heartwood its deep chocolate color and tight, wavy grain. By the time it reached maturity it stood over 80 feet tall.

APRIL 2024

The Storm

This walnut tree was felled naturally by an EF3 tornado that cut through the county with winds exceeding 140 mph.

WINTER 2025

The Mill

The trunk was bucked and slabbed during the winter of 2025 before rot set in. Each slab was hand-selected, stickered, and moved to the drying barn — beginning the slow transition from fallen tree to something that will outlast the storm that brought it down.
